- not updated yet - There will be a joint conference proceedings, titled The New Cosmology, consisting of papers for both the Mitchell Symposium on Observational Cosmology (April 12-16) and the Strings and Cosmology Conference (March 14-17). The soft deadline for receipt of manuscripts is is July 16, 2004. The truly hard deadline is October 1, 2004. If you go to http://proceedings.aip.org/proceedings/8x11s.jsp and click on "Download macros as zip archive (approx. 200Kb)" you will get all the files needed for the AIP format. These should be unzipped and put in a folder. Alternatively, these files can be downloaded one-by-one by clicking on "Download macros as individual files." Again they should be put into the folder where you will keep the LaTeX file for your article. It is probably easiest to just copy/paste your paper into the template supplied by the AIP -- template-8s.tex -- in the usual way. __________________________________________________________________________ Type 1 Adobe fonts are acceptable and work best. Authors must make sure to embed all fonts and graphics when saving the file. Missing fonts often present problems. Graphics: set the graphics for 600 dpi resolution. Scanning in figures at 300 dpi resolution will not produce acceptable output at the printer. If you plan on submitting conference photographs, the digital files (for example, jpg) must be high resolution files. A minimum of 600 dpi is recommended. While photographs submitted at 72 dpi or even 300 dpi will look fine on your screen, they do not print well in the proceedings. For each article in the
proceedings, AIP needs to receive a
signed transfer of copyright form; a copy is provided here, which
already has the general information for your proceedings volume entered
(Allen-Pope TCA.pdf). Also provided are 2 other forms that have also
been customized for your proceedings: (1) a form for requesting
permission to reprint published material (which is needed only from
authors who include previously-published material in their papers), and
(2) a form for ordering offprints/reprints, for use by authors who want
to order such. These are "Allen-Pope permissions.pdf" and "Allen-Pope
offprints.pdf," respectively. All three of these forms have been
recently updated, including the new projected publication date of
December 2004. These 3 forms (Allen-Pope TCA.pdf, Allen-Pope permissions.pdf, Allen-Pope offprints.pdf) are available here: Allen-Pope TCA.pdf, Allen-Pope permissions.pdf, Allen-Pope offprints.pdf __________________________________________________________________________ Letter sent to invited speakers: There will be a joint proceedings volume for the two conferences, titled The New Cosmology. The editors are Roland E. Allen, Dimitri V. Nanopoulos, and Christopher N. Pope. We have contracted with the American Institute of Physics for an attractive hardcover volume of up to 750 pages in large format (8.5 x 11 inches) and single column (to better accommodate both figures and equations). There will be up to 20 full-color pages. We chose AIP because they have excellent standards for quality, and because the proceedings will be immediately available online as well as in printed form. In addition, AIP proceedings papers can be cited by volume and page number. I.e., they are really part of the literature. Because of the remarkably high quality of the speakers at these two conferences (see the lists of speakers below), we offer you a choice of format for your contribution: If you wish, you may choose to write a review chapter of up to 30 pages. Alternatively, you may choose to write a conference article of up to 15 pages. We would like to urge you to consider writing a review chapter, since it would be a service to the community to have the remarkable recent discoveries and ideas in cosmology summarized in one volume by the very people who made these discoveries and created these ideas. It is easy to see the value of a coherent set of review chapters written essentially at the moment that cosmology has achieved its new status as a consistent and precise area of science, while also revealing mysteries that are as profound as those which existed at the beginning of the 20th Century. Again, we hope that you will consider writing one of the review chapters on these exciting developments, but a conference article would also be quite welcome. In a later message we will give information on the mechanics (publisher's format etc.), but first we would like to get your response so we can begin planning the volume -- for example, the order of the review chapters. Could you email us a response as soon as possible regarding your contribution to the proceedings? Namely, would you prefer to write a review chapter or a conference article? Also, how many pages should we allocate? The deadlines negotiated with the publisher are as follows: Titles, page lengths, and ancillary materials (copyright transfer etc.) for review chapters are due by July 16. Conference articles and their ancillary materials are also due by July 16. Complete review chapters are due by October 1. These deadline are required if the volume is to have a 2004 publication date. E.g., if the deadline were allowed to slip by as much as two weeks, the publication date would be 2005, making all the results appear to be less timely than they are actually are. For this reason, we plan to transmit to the publisher the review chapters and conference articles as they stand on October 1, 2004. We would appreciate it if you could inform us of your preferences by April 30 so we can inform the publishers regarding the length and format. Each contributor will receive a free copy of the published volume, of course. We look forward to hearing from you, Roland Allen Christopher Pope __________________________________________________________________________ Invited Speakers, Mitchell Symposium on Observational Cosmology Saul Perlmutter,
